NDIS WAN CAPI Driver
NDIS is the abbreviation for Network Device Interface Specification, and represents a standard for communication between network adapters (hardware) and network protocols (software). NDIS WAN is a Microsoft extension of this standard for wide-area network (WAN) connections. The NDIS WAN CAPI Driver makes it possible to use the AVM ISDN-Controller as a WAN adapter in the Dial-Up Networking component of Windows XP, 2000, and NT, or Windows Me, 98, and 95. The driver builds on the ISDN-Controller's CAPI 2.0 applications interface. In Windows 2000 and later, the NDIS WAN CAPI Driver is always installed automatically together with the ISDN-Controller's CAPI 2.0 driver, and does not require running a separate setup program as in the older Windows versions. Full Dial-Up Networking support for installations with more than one active AVM ISDN-Controller is provided in Windows XP and 2000 by the (Co)NDIS WAN CAPI Driver integrated in the CAPI 2.0 driver.
With the NDIS WAN CAPI Driver installed, Windows' Dial-Up Networking can connect to an Internet service provider over ISDN. Moreover, Microsoft Remote Access Services (RAS) can be used with all its integrated features, including PPP Multilink (channel bundling), data compression, call-back, PAP and CHAP.
Applications that work with TAPI modems, such as HyperTerminal, cannot use the NDIS WAN Driver. Furthermore, the Microsoft NDIS specification does not permit the configuration of other ISDN B channel protocols besides HDLC and PPP over ISDN (RFC 1618). For applications requiring other B-channel protocols, please use the AVM ISDN CAPI Port Driver. In order to use the NDIS WAN CAPI Driver in Windows 95, you must also install the Microsoft ISDN Accelerator Pack, Version 1.1 or later. This component is already integrated in Windows 98 and later versions, so that the MS ISDN Accelerator Pack 1.1 does not need to be installed.
For a detailed description of the NDIS WAN CAPI Driver, please see the on-line help file "Ndis_98.chm", included with the driver.
