Safe surfing – a topic that never goes out of style. Being careful isn’t enough – you absolutely must take additional measures to protect yourself. As a manufacturer of hardware and software for easy and secure Internet access, AVM helps you find the right protection for your PC and network.

But what basic safety precautions do you need to take when going online?

Regular updates

Your operating system and browser (Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox for example) prompt you regularly to update. Always install these updates since they often remove vulnerabilities. A firewall and virus scanner protect your PC from external attacks and protect malware from intruding. Update your virus scanner regularly to arm yourself against new malware.

Secure WLAN encryption

Protect your wireless Internet connection (WLAN). Only the WPA and WPA2 encryption protocols offer effective protection for your network. Keep in mind: Encryptions according to the WEP standard, which is still in widespread use, are not secure and can be cracked within minutes. Also protect your network with as complex a password as possible.

Healthy amount of suspicion when surfing the Internet

Also be aware of potential phishing attacks, in which scammers try to steal sensitive data (such as your account data for online banking). It’s a good idea always to be slightly suspicious when online. For example, ignore e-mails that prompt you to enter PINs, TANs, passwords or other sensitive data. As an owner of a FRITZ!Box, you should also protect its user interface with a password to prevent third party access.

See the security area of our Web site for many helpful tips about the Internet, WLAN, telephony and DECT. We also publish countless protective measures for the benefit of users of AVM in the security area. The good news for everyone who uses a FRITZ!Box to go online: As with all other FRITZ!Box functions, the security functions are continuously being further developed and can be updated free of charge with every new firmware update.
