The organization

As one of the largest educational institutions in the State of Saxony, the vocational training association Kolping Bildungswerk Sachsen (KBW) maintains intensive communications channels with public institutions, government agencies and numerous partner businesses. KBW's wide-area network makes use of a broad range of AVM products.

The objective

Kolping Bildungswerk Sachsen (KBW) has over 15 major locations with numerous training sites in the state of Saxony and elsewhere in Germany. This territorial extension, together with the need for intensive internal communications, make a comprehensive ISDN and networking solution necessary.

The ISDN solution

Today, KBW's NetWare 4.x LANs (with the MPR for ISDN and AVM ISDN-Controller B1), its stand-alone PCs (with FRITZ!Card PCMCIA) and mobile users (with Mobile ISDN-Controller M1 or M2 and AVM NetWAYS/ISDN) are connected to an MPR for ISDN with an AVM ISDN-Controller T1-B in the head office in Dresden. Right from the start KBW wanted to be able to use individually available data communications services in the heterogeneous internetwork. This specification has been implemented through the installation of Network Distributed ISDN for Windows NT (NDI) and NetWare Connect for ISDN (NWCI). In the main office of KBW, a Windows NT Server equipped with NDI shares centralized ISDN resources with the workstations. LAN users access ISDN services on up to four channels through the CAPI interface. Employees in four branch locations can also access the most important telematics services in the same way through NetWare Connect.

Application scenario

The network at a glance

  • Windows NT 4.0 Server
  • AVM Network Distributed ISDN for Windows NT
  • Microsoft IIS web server
  • Novell NetWare 3.12, 4.x
  • Novell Client 32
  • Windows 3.x workstations
  • Windows 95 workstations
  • AVM NetWare MultiProtocol Router for ISDN (BRI and PRI)
  • AVM ISDN-Controller T1-B
  • Components at the branch offices and training sites:
  • AVM NetWare Connect for ISDN
  • AVM ISDN-Controller B1
  • AVM Mobile ISDN-Controllers M1 and M2
  • AVM NetWAYS/ISDN

The benefits

The use of NDI and NWCI allows employees to perform a wide range of communications tasks from their workstations, with no additional hardware. Kolping Bildungswerk Sachsen has helped to optimize its own communications processes by making use of this modern technology, with positive effects on the training programs it offers. Key advantages result from:

  • the reliable, robust solution
  • the availability of important applications such as file transfer, telebanking through the on-line service T-Online, and a direct connection to the bank
  • simple administration of the network, and
  • savings on ISDN terminal equipment.
