Unauthorized Interception of Calls

Placing calls over the Internet has become commonplace. Users choose Voice over IP (VoIP) particularly because of the cost savings. Unlike in traditional telephony, in VoIP communication takes place over the Internet. This means that users must take the same kind of security precautions as when they surf the Internet to prevent potential dangers such as unauthorized third parties listening in on conversations. But rest assured: Placing calls over the Internet is generally more secure than placing calls from a traditional landline phone.

Here’s how to protect yourself

In general, Illegally listening in on VoIP conversations on the Internet is technically extremely complicated and is very involved.
Watch out: If you use an external SIP phone to place calls on a network (WLAN or LAN), your calls could theoretically be intercepted, but only if the attacker has direct access to the network. Here’s how it works. When you use an SIP phone, the conversation is transmitted in individual data packets on the local network using a special protocol. These packets can be recorded by other subscribers on the network.

Here’s how AVM protects you

Use the FRITZ!Box Fon Internet telephony function, and you’re protected against unwanted third parties listening in on your local network, even if attackers have direct access to your network.
This also applies when you place calls using FRITZ! Mini or a DECT phone subscribed to the FRITZ!Box Fon.
A protective mechanism in the FRITZ!Box Fon prevents voice data during the telephone conversation from entering the local network. As a result, even those with direct access to a PC cannot listen in on calls.
