Online in your car with the FRITZ!Box

Why not use UMTS with the FRITZ!Box to surf the Internet in the car too?

Some of the best ideas are born out of emergency situations. This is exactly what happened to an AVM employee who works in product development: weeks after moving to a new apartment, he was still waiting for his ADSL connection. To maintain contact to the outside world, he went out and bought a UMTS stick with a SIM card and flat-rate. All he had to do was insert the stick into the USB port of the FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7270 and he was back online again, sending e-mails and surfing the Internet. He was even able to connect to AVM over VPN.

Why not use the FRITZ!Box in the car too?

This gave him an idea: why not use UMTS to surf the Internet in the car too? He just couldn't stop thinking about it and quickly found a way to hook up the FRITZ!Box to a power source in the car: The engineer bought an adapter for the 12-volt connection of the cigarette lighter which then supplied the FRITZ!Box with power from the car battery. This innovator didn't notice any power fluctuations that could damage the FRITZ!Box in his car. And when reception in the trunk isn't good enough because of the insulating effect of the car body, he puts the UMTS stick up next to the window with an extension cable.

Several passengers online at the same time

The benefit is immediately obvious: if you're not the person driving, you can entertain yourself on your laptop with Youtube, write e-mails or get traffic information. What is the advantage of using this solution over simply using a UMTS stick on your notebook? Several passengers can surf the Internet at the same time, even with devices that don't have a USB port. All you need is the WLAN network key. Theoretically, the FRITZ!Box could also be used in a taxi, allowing drivers to offer customers easy and secure WLAN Internet access.
