The FRITZ!OS series – new features for your FRITZ!Box

Part 4: sharing Internet access via WLAN and naming your FRITZ!Box

In the fourth and penultimate part of our series on the new functions of FRITZ!OS, you’ll find detailed information on how to turn an existing Internet connection into a wireless one, as well as discover the benefits of giving your FRITZ!Box its very own name.

Sharing Internet access via WLAN

It has long been possible to share an existing Internet connection by using an Ethernet cable. Now, you can also connect to your FRITZ!Box via WLAN with another wireless router of your choice, and use this to access the Internet. This can be useful if, for example, you’ve just moved house, or for use within condominiums. What’s more, some smartphones can be tethered and therefore also used by your FIRTZ!Box to gain temporary wireless Internet access.

Call up “fritz.box” on your browser and, from the menu, go to “Internet”/“Account Information”/“Internet Service Provider”/“Existing connection over WLAN.”

Naming your FRITZ!Box

Getting a better overview with more complex home networks is now effortless: give your FRITZ!Box a name of your choice. All you need to do is enter it once by going to “Home Network/FRITZ!Box Name.”

The name will then be used throughout the local network: on displays within the home network, for the UPnP media server, the address in the browser, the user interface, and as your wireless network name (SSID). Your chosen name will then be assigned to your FIRTZ!Box and appear on your computer, smartphone, LAN-enabled TV and DLNA-compatible playback devices. This provides people using a number of FRITZ!Box products within one network with a better overview.

Once you’ve renamed your FRITZ!Box, you need to reconnect your wireless devices to it. This will be a breeze thanks to the WPS feature – simply hold down the WLAN button on your FRITZ!Box for six seconds.
